Hereon Summer Simulation Seminar

The Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon in cooperation with the Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg organizes a two-part Seminar on Simulation. The webinar will be held online between May and June 2021:

HyCARE Innovations published on EU Innoradar

The HyCARE project is producing three technology innovations with exploitation potential. The three innovations are:

  • Design of metal hydride pellets and manufacture procedure for hydrogen storage (by GKN GmbH, ENGIE and Stühff GmbH)
  • Design of an innovative tank for hydrogen storage using metal hydride as hydrogen carrier (by Hereon and Stühff GmbH)
  • Heat recovery system to use the heat produced in the absortion of H2 during its subsequent desorption ( by Fondazione Bruno Kessler and Tecnodelta SpA)

Third Scientific Paper published on JALCOM

The scientific paper “Fundamental hydrogen storage properties of TiFe-alloy with partial substitution of Fe by Ti and Mn” has been published on the Journal of Alloys and Compounds, 159925. The paper investigates the thermodynamic changes induced by the variation of Ti content along the homogeneity range of the TiFe phase (Ti:Fe ratio from 1:1 to 1:0.9) and of the substitution of Mn for Fe between 0 and 5 at.%. The results show dependence of hydrogen storage properties as a function of over an extended Ti and Mn compositional range.

The results derives from the research performed by HyCARE researchers Dematteis, Dreistadt, Capurso, Jepsen, Cuevas, and Latroche to define the optimal alloy composition for the HyCARE hydrogen storage system.

Webinar Master Course Autonoma University Madrid

Fermin Cuevas (CNRS) hold a webinar on the HyCARE research activity related to TiFe intermetallics for large-scale stationary hydrogen storage. The webinar involved 15 students of the Master de Energías y Combustibles para el Futuro, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

The webinar presented the HyCARE project and described the tailoring and optimization of the allow composition for hydrogen storage performed by CNRS. It explained the R&D activities which inlude alloy design, tuning to thermodynamic operational conditions, activation and kinetic issues, as well as cycling stability, resistance to impurities and limited use of raw critical materials.

HyCARE at World Online Conference on Sustainable Technologies

Today Erika De Matteis presented her new publication on hydrogen storage properties of TiFe alloys at WOCST. This year, the World Online Conference on Sustainable Technologies has been organised completely online to give the opportunity to more scientists to exchange the latest results on Renewable Energy Sources, Hydrogen and Fuel Cells, Membranes and Membrane Processes, and Power to Fuels. Young scientists as Erika had the opportunity to attend the conference and debate with scientists from all over the world.

Substitutional effects in TiFe for hydrogen storage: a comprehensive review

HyCARE’s second publication has been officially released on the Journal “Materials Advaces”. This work aims to provide a comprehensive review of publications involving chemical substitution in TiFe-based compounds for guiding compound design and materials selection in current and future hydrogen storage applications.

The paper is the result of almost 2-year work, collecting, reading and reviewing literature on TiFe and its elemental substitutions. Congratulations to our research Erika De Matteis for her excellent and passionate work.

Stocker l’hydrogène dans des matériauz: du laboratoire à l’application

Fermin Cuevas, Research Director of CNRS, has presented the HyCARE project in the launch event of the French Research network on hydrogen research. Cuevas’ presentation focused on the HyCARE’s journey: from laboratory research on the properties of alloys, through characterization and production of metal hydrides and PCM in collaboration with European laboratories and SMEs, to final application for hydrogen storage by ENGIE in Paris.

Renewable energy: the golden age of hydrogen

Green, blue, grey: the colors of hydrogen for building the energy transition in Europe. Hydrogen plays a key role in the decarbonization strategies of Germany, France, the Netherland, and Portugal. The 2050 scenarios of the International Renewable Energy Agency forecast that 6% of energy consumption will be related to green hydrogen.

The article (Italian) by Maurizio Bongioanni on Renewable Matter describes the perspectives and challenges for the development of the hydrogen value chain in Italy and Europe. Prof. Baricco presents HyCARE as an innovative storage technology for building the energy transition based on hydrogen. The use of metal hydrides and phase changing materials can makes HyCARE a suitable and sustainable technology for mid-size stationary storage of renewables.

CNRS Hydrogen Research Federation: Launch Event

Our partner CNRS is glad to launch the French Hydrogen Research Federation. The launch event will take place online on 9th of March 2021, from 9 am to 12 am.

The FRH2 federation brings together more than 270 scientists who are experts in the hydrogen field and who work in cutting-edge CNRS laboratories with their academic and industrial partners. It positions the CNRS as an essential link in R&D to promote innovative multidisciplinary projects, the main objectives of which are to remove scientific barriers and propose technological breakthroughs. 

The inaugural event of FRH2 is an opportunity to present to all the players in the sector, the teams and the research activities carried out in the large “energy” landscape of the CNRS.

Giovanni Capruso is the researcher in the “Monthly Picture” of Helmoltz Zentrums Geesthacht (HZG)

The February edition of the Holmoltz Klima Initiative Newsletter focuses on hydrogen research at Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht Centre (HZG). The newsletter reports the activities of HyCARE’s researcher Giovanni Capruso for the simulation of the loading and unloading cycles in the HyCARE’s storage tank.

In the “picture of the month”, Giovanni is depicted while performing his research on the HyCARE system. Giovanni’s work is key to setup and validate the thermo-chemical physical model of the HyCARE’s prototype and for the analysis of temperature and pressure parameters in the storage cycles with metal hydrides.
