(S)TEAM today, make changes for tomorrow

HyCARE’s researchers E. M. Dematteis and J. Barale organized the Smart Labs as part of the event “(S)TEAM today, make changes for tomorrow”. Our researchers presented the HyCARE project and explained to young students why we should care about a renewable hydrogen future. They demonstrated how to produce hydrogen from small PV panels and to use the hydrogen produced as fuel for electric vehicles. Our young audience appeared very interested in hydrogen technology. Let’s hope to have inspired the next generation of hydrogen visionaries!

4th EERA workshop & 1st AMPEA-E3S joint workshop on “Sustainability Assessment of materials and technologies for a clean energy transition

Since the summer of 2021, the EERA network is hosting a workshop series on “Energy Materials for Innovation (EM4I)”. The series, consisting in six workshops, covers the integral stages of materials research, from discovery to scale-up productions, device development, industrial integration and sustainability, as well as cross-cutting technologies supporting these actions.

The fourth of the series focuses on “Sustainability assessment of materials and technologies for a clean energy transition”. The workshop, with the participation of AMPEA-E3S researchers, aimed to develop mutual understanding of societal needs and technological advances and to foster new collaborations necessary for achieving the Clean Energy Transition.

The contribution presented by HyCARE’s researcher Mattia Costamagna at the workshop focused on case studies in which the Life Cycle Assessment methodology was used to evaluate the environmental burdens associated with the use of Metal Hydride technology. In fact, this technology represents an interesting and promising solution that can be used for the compression and storage of hydrogen.

Workshop with Italian Stakeholders

HyCARE participates to the event organized by BEST4Hy project

On 9th February, the BEST4Hy project has organized its first project’s workshop on HYDROGEN STORIES AND INNOVATION dedicated to the Italian stakeholders (STORIE DI IDROGENO E INNOVAZIONE: il progetto BEST4Hy condivide buone pratiche e opportunità delle tecnologie a idrogeno per le PMI).

The workshop aimed to discuss innovation and sustainability of fuel cells and hydrogen technologies, sharing best practices and virtuous stories.

The HyCARE project have been invited to participate and contribute with the experiences, challenges and best practices developed during the three years of project. The project coordinator Prof. Marcello Baricco (University of Turin) shared the HyCARE project progresses on its innovative hydrogen storage system for renewable energy.

Cristina Maggi, as representative of the Italian hydrogen and fuel cells association (H2IT), gave an overview of the European and Italian hydrogen strategy, as well as the opportunities for hydrogen SMEs.

The workshop closed with a roundtable discussion on the needs, issues and opportunities for companies to use hydrogen production and storage technologies.

HyCARE results presented at the European Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Conference 2021

Our PhD student Jussara Barale presented her research activities on the characterisation of the HyCARE’s alloy at the EFC21 conference. Her presentation was entitled “Industrial production and characterization of TiFe0.85Mn0.05 alloy for a large -scale hydrogen storage plant” and was part of the session on Hydrogen Storage.

HyCARE 7th Project Meeting in Geesthacht

HyCARE Consortium

The HyCARE Consortium met at Hereon in Germany on December 13 and 14, 2021. The meeting has been crucial to align on the development activities of the HyCare system, which is currently under assembly at Stühff GmbH in Geestacht, Germany.

The coming year will be the final one for the HyCARE project. The system prototype will be finalized and it will be transferred to Engie Lab Criegen for testing and validation. The Hycare tank is expected to store up to 40 kg of hydrogen via metal hydrides. The main innovation is the use of Phase Changing Materials to activate the hydrogen absorption and desorption at high efficiency and low pressure (30 bars).

HyCARE presents results at the FCH JU Programme Review Days 2021

The HyCARE project has been presented at the FCH JU Programme Review Days 2021, the final events of the European Hydrogen Week. The project coordinator Marcello Baricco presented the latest achievements of the project and explained the novelty of combining Phase Changing Materials (PCM) and metal hydrides for low-pressure hydrogen storage.

The HyCARE system is currently under assembly at Stühff (Germany). During the second half of the project, the system will be completed and shipped to Engie Labs in Paris. It will be operated for over a six-months period to test and validate the system.

HyCARE will participate to the FCH JU Programme Review Days

On December 2 at 4 pm, our coordinator Marcello Baricco will present the progress of the HyCARE project in the Panel Session on “H2 Distribution and Storage/Carriers” at the FCH JU Programme Review Days.

This two-days event will kick-close the EU Hydrogen week and, following the tradition of the past 11 years, will provide an excellent visibility platform for more than 60 projects currently on-going under FCH JU.

More than 53 selected projects and initiatives will have the opportunity to present their progress, obtain feedback, exchange ideas and best practices on the latest technological developments in the sector. Throughout the entire event we will also make available for download scientific posters for all FCH JU funded projects.

Dr. Cuevas @ the 4th Energy Future Conference

HyCARE researcher Fermin Cuevas has participated as academic speakers to the 4th Energy Future Conference organized by the Australian UNSW Energy Institute. The conference brought together scientists, engineers, academia, investors, industry, and policymakers to discuss the Emerging technologies across hydrogen value chain from hydrogen production and conversion, storage, distribution, safety and standards, applications, as well as unseen challenges associated with establishing the Hydrogen economy including environmental issues, water supply as well as social acceptance.

During the Conference, Cuevas presented his work related to the alloy design, tuning to thermodynamic operation conditions, activation and kinetic issues, as well as to cycling stability, resistance to impurities and limited use of raw critical materials.

Dr. De Matteis presents her results on TiFe- substituted intermetallic at New Times Conference

HyCARE’s researcher Erika De Matteis presented her research on “TiFe- substituted intermetallic for large-scale stationary hydrogen storage at the international conference “New Times – New Trends in Materials Science and Engineering 1st International Virtual Conference“. This virtual meeting aimed at providing a forum on new trends on materials science and engineering from the Italian community and beyond. The scope was to gather engineers, physicists, chemists and materials scientists working on innovative materials and their applications.

HyCARE at 5th Hydrogen Technologies Congress

Dr. De Matteis has presented her HyCARE’s research activities on the optimal alloy composition for the HyCARE system. Her presentation on “Fundamental hydrogen storage properties of TiFe-alloy with partial substitution of Fe by Ti and Mn” provided an overview of the main results of the experimental activities conducted in collaboration with CNRS and HEREON.
